Letlhogonolo Mokgoroane

Letlhogonolo Mokgoroane is a South African legal practitioner practising as an advocate (barrister) and is a member of the Johannesburg Society of Advocates. They also head strategic litigation and research at OurEquity NPC. They are also part-time in-house counsel for the Centre for Applied Legal Studies (CALS) at the University of the Witswatersrand.

Mokgoroane has written submissions to the United Nations and the South African National Assembly on matters related to rights for queer people on various issues such as legal identification and marriages, as well as on matters of hate speech and gender based violence.

They have worked on cases on gender based violence and the right to freedom of expression. They are currently working on the rights of sex workers and the right to health, the rights of trans people, particularly prisoners to gain access to gender affirming health care and legal recognition. They have worked on amicus brief submissions to the European Court of Human Rights on various issues relating to the right to health.

They hold a master’s degree in law from the University of California, Los Angeles, focused on public interest law and critical race studies.

They have also clerked for Justice Madlanga, who is the current Acting Deputy Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court.
