Updates from the Center for Global Health Policy & Politics
Spotlight
On December 16, the Global Council on AIDS, Inequality and Pandemics presented its new report, “Breaking the inequality-pandemic cycle: Building true health security in a global age” to the UNAIDS Programme Coordinating Board (PCB) in Brazil.
The report examines how inequalities fuel more severe and prolonged pandemics, while pandemics in turn deepen existing social and economic inequalities.
Council Members Winnie Byanyima, Nísia Trindade Lima, and Matthew Kavanagh were joined by Mariangela Batista Galvao Simao, Brazil’s Secretary of Health and Environmental Surveillance, to discuss the findings of the report, Brazil’s experiences with inequalities and pandemics including AIDS and COVID-19, and the Council’s four recommendations to tackle inequalities.
The Center’s Matthew Kavanagh also had the opportunity to meet with Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and to discuss the report’s findings with Minister Alexandre Padilha.
